KEEPING IT TRUE

*** an excerpt from my LJ blog: http://fairytale-not.livejournal.com/

A friend of mine uttered these words when confronted with a question on the existence of true love:

"There's no such thing as true love. Just plain love two people keep true. If they can do it then that will make the relationship special."

I say: AMEN.

I can't claim to be an expert. Afterall, I've never even had a boyfriend so what right have I got to dish out advice, right? Admittedly, absolutely none.

But I am familiar with the various facets of human relationships and there are certain things I hold in my heart to be true. So this is what I'd like to say to those who'd care to give this argument some thought...

It is natural for us to always wish for the best, to dream of a certain grandness, to be on the quest for "happily ever after." And I say there is nothing wrong with that. It's perfectly fine. We all deserve to be happy. And we should not be committing ourselves to things with hesitation. Like Mitzi and I say, "If you're gonna bomb, go nuclear" meaning might as well give it your best if you'll be doing it anyway. I myself am guilty of always wanting the best, of giving my one hundred percent, of not settling unless I am totally convinced.

However, I've come to learn with my everyday dealings with people and with ideas that while what I mentioned is the ideal case and is what we should generally be looking for, it unfortunately cannot happen all of the time. So we need to hold on to that philosophy whilst still being open to change and dealing with what's here to work with.

Every once in a while, life throws us just a small piece of a heaven-baked pie of goodness and the task of figuring out the recipe is in our hands. We may not realize that a great thing has come until we've exercised openness and gave it a bit of effort. And that doesn't make the serendipitous discovery any less of a wonderful thing. It just makes it all the more valuable with the process involved.

So I guess what I'm saying is that while that entire fate-kismet-soulmate concept is nice to entertain, it's just also important to remind ourselves to mix a healthy dose of reality with our dreams. The natural order and human will go hand in hand. Life's wonderful like that.
