Last night, as I turned the radio on for my daily share of good music, I thought for a moment that I was in the twilight zone. I switched the dial from one station to another and found out that ten stations broadcasted the exact same thing.

After a brief period of shock, I found out that FM stations Magic 89.9, RX 93.1, Mellow Touch 94.7, 99.5 RT, NU 107 and other radio stations held a simulcast of "Radio Works!" a collaborative effort that served as a campaign for radio.

It was great, really really really great! Whoever thought the idea up is a genius.

1. Despite the influx of visual media, it is true that the radio is still an important and influential form of media. There are just some things better left to the imagination and more suitably heard than seen or read. Radio really does work!

2. The fact that competing radio stations joined forces in creating this event is something to marvel about. It shows that those in the radio business are willing to help each other. They placed the welfare of their field first before rivalry. I doubt that ABS-CBN and GMA will collaborate (as in really collaborate, not just in a phony way!) anytime soon.

3. They were able to put many Filipino talents together. The show included superb performances by soul siren Nina, singer-songwriter Ogie Alcasid, seems-to-be-suffering-from-an-identity-crisis-but-still-sounds-good South Border, black soul diva Jaya, oldies but goodies Side A, and many more. Not only had "Radio Works!" promoted radio but also Filipino music. Not only did competing stations unite but competing artists also joined hands.

"Radio Works!" really worked for me. More people in the media should follow this campaign's footsteps. Now more than ever because of its accessibility has the such power to inform, to entertain, to enlighten, and to instigate change. It's about time that they make the most out of it. Radio today, the entire media tomorrow!
